Keeping a potted Christmas tree can successfully be done if you follow a few simple instructions:
The trees are dormant when they leave the nursery. The tree can be left inside for a maximum of 5-7 days. If left longer, the warm inside temperatures will cause it to break dormancy. It will not survive if moved outside or planted after that time period. The tree can be decorated with lights and simple ornaments and be kept on the porch if purchased before it is needed inside. Then it can be moved inside for the recommended period of time.
Keep the tree away from fireplaces, heaters, TV sets or anything that generates heat.
Water the tree well before you bring it inside and do not allow it to dry out. Avoid this by checking the soil every couple of days. It should be kept moist but not soggy.
If the ground is too frozen to plant the tree, store it on the North side of the house (the shady side) in its pot. The tree will do best if it’s not in direct sun. Water the tree once more when put outside, then check it monthly.
If you choose to plant the tree after Christmas, dig the hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball (use the nursery pot as a guide). Purchase a bag of soil or two and some compost. Store them in a heated space so they do not freeze and you can use them to backfill the tree. Mix 1/3 compost to 2/3 soil. Then water it well and check it monthly for water until spring.
