          Deer & Rabbit Resistance

UNFORTUNATELY,
There is no such thing as a truly Deer or Rabbit Resistant plant.
If populations are high that year, natural sources of food are scarce, or there is damage to their habitat (forest fire, flood, etc), They will eat ANYTHING!
There is Hope!
There are plants that can survive the damage done by grazing animals or they may avoid the plants listed below due to their texture or odor.

Other Common Wildlife Issues

Picture

Scarring

Definition: When Deer, Elk, or Wildlife rub body parts or antlers against a trunk to scratch an itch. Can also occur from larger animals such a Bear trying to access fruit and damaging branches.

Commonly impacts: Trees and Large Shrubs

Solutions: Deer Fencing, Tree Wrapping, and Yard Fencing.

Cure: A scarred trunk can heal although it is important to keep any "open wounds" under close supervision. Consult an Arborist or Extension Agent.

Gophers and Pack Rats

These pests will generally eat the roots of your plants. Avoid shallow-rooted plants and head for the Chamisa, the ultimate pest-resistant plant!

Wild Turkeys & Birds

Occasionally, Turkeys and Birds may peruse your garden for available seeds and food to aid them through migration in the Fall or Nesting in the spring.

Cover seeds with a light layer of soil to keep them protected from foragers.
