Informative Handouts
WHat is a Perennial?
This is a term that applies to any plant that can survive the lowest winter temperatures in your yard. Click here to learn about Zones and what plants may qualify as a perennial for your yard!

It is also used as a term for a "Bedding Plant" or for an "Outside" plant. It will overwinter in your yard and can thrive in a permanent home in the soil. These lower growing Forbes can provide flowers, groundcover, erosion control, and many more benefits to your yard.
What Does full sun, partial sun, partial shade, and full shade imply?
Answer to question 1
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATERWISE, XERIC, & NATIVE?
Waterwise is a term that generally applies to a landscape or plant that uses water wisely and is the mindset of many gardeners in the southwest. We all like to conserve water and save money while keeping a happy and healthy garden. It is important to remember that most plants in a waterwise garden require consistent water for approximately 2 years before being considered established plants.

Native is a term used for plants found in our natural environment. In La Plata County we are blessed with some of the best the Southwest has to offer! We are the High Desert, or Alpine Desert, full of naturally waterwise plants and species that make our hot summers spectacular. Some of our favorite native plants include Colorado Blue Spruce, Rocky Mountain Columbine, Aspens, Mountain Lupine, Blue Grama Grass, and so many more!

Xeric is a term used to describe a landscape that uses Waterwise and Native plants to create a sustainable environment. Check out our guide to Xeriscaping and how to install those principles into your yard.
